OK, when I first noticed the trailer for Bumblebee (the upcoming film from the Transformers franchise) on my YouTube feed yesterday, it did catch my eye, but I wasn’t terribly excited about it. I was eagerly awaiting the trailer for next year’s Lego movie, after all.😋 Well, I did get around to watching the Bumblebee trailer earlier today and I can now say that I am (cautiously) excited!
First, a bit of context might be required. As a teenager in the 80s, Transformers was one of the things I was really into. Although I can’t say that I watched the original animated series religiously, I thought the robots in it were amazingly cool. I had (and still do have) several toys from that era (which I believe collectors refer to as G1 toys). And my favourite Autobot was without a doubt Bumblebee, the small yellow robot who disguised himself as Volkswagen Beetle.
When the Transformers reboot film series was launched (way back in 2007), I had hopes that it might recapture at least some of magic of the old cartoons, but alas, this was not the case. They made a lot of changes to the original Transformers concept and for me the worst of these changes was the “modernization” of Bumblebee, who was longer a Beetle. This new spin-off, however, is obviously a prequel (the Rick Astley number is the dead giveaway) and thankfully Bumblebee is in his glorious original vehicle form! This, I have to say, makes me very happy.😊 But that’s not all, folks! On top of my favourite Autobot, this new film apparently also has my favourite Decepticon…
I think Starscream (from the original series) is a lot of people’s favourite Decepticon. Although It’s hard to tell how much of a part Starscream will play in this movie from this teaser, again it’s great to see him in (what I assume is) his original F-15 fighter jet mode. If they also manage to get his character right, Starscream‘s scenes alone might be worth the price of a ticket to Bumblebee!
I also want to briefly talk about the film’s female protagonist, otherwise this post would lack relevance to this blog’s raison d’être.😋 Her name is Charlie Watson and she is played by Hailee Steinfeld. Not much is revealed about Charlie in the trailer (apart from the fact that she’s a mechanic), but she looks like she could be a cool character. As for Ms Steinfeld’s previous acting work, I can’t say I’m familiar with it, but according to her Wikipedia entry she did receive a lot of praise for her role in 2010’s True Grit. So I’m sure her performance will be one of high quality and I look forward seeing it.
At the beginning of this post I did say I was cautiously excited about this film. The cautiousness is due to the fact that overall the Transformers movies haven’t really done much for me. I saw the first two in the cinema and I kind of disinterestedly watched the third on TV. After that, I tuned out completely, which means I’m not even sure how many Transformers films have been made in total to this point. But I do hope that Bumblebee turns out to be more entertaining than the previous films. Any, that’s all for now. Till next time, au revoir, arrivederci and may the force be with you!😊
