I didn’t know about this until I signed into Steam a few moments ago. Apparently the 2015 adventure game Life is Strange, which was created by French studio Dontnod, is getting a prequel called, rather appropriately, Before the Storm. It was announced at E3, just a couple of days ago.
I thought the original Life Is Strange was a great game. It was beautiful to look at and the story was quite interesting. However, it had its flaws. Apart from the fact that, contrary to the marketing spiel, your choices don’t really affect the game that much, there was also the issue of the whole payoff. It depended entirely on you caring about someone that, in my opinion, wasn’t really worth caring about: the protagonist’s “BFF” Chloe Price. And now Chloe is the protagonist this time round. So I can’t really say I’m terribly excited by this announcement. It may be that this prequel makes Chloe a more sympathetic character, but it’s not going to be easy to make me change my view of her as an angry, self-centred and extremely manipulative individual. I’m actually more interested in the Life Is Strange sequel, which is also in the works. But I’ll keep an eye out for news about Before the Storm too, just to see if my expectations for it change.
Till next time, au revoir, arrivederci and may the force be with you!
